Red-breasted Merganser, Fort De Soto Park_93E6948

The red-breasted merganser (Mergus serrator) is a diving duck, one of the sawbills.  Red-breasted mergansers dive and swim underwater. They mainly eat small fish, but also aquatic insects, crustaceans, and frogs.  Males and females look totally different from each other.

Feeling thirsty, IMG_4928

This male duck stops for a sip every time he passes by the birdbath, which is several times a day before walking back to the lake for a swim. Why not drinking from the lake, I wonder?
